A Birmingham meteorologist said his young daughter is recovering in the hospital after being bitten by a venomous snake.

Jason Simpson with WVTM in Birmingham and formerly with WHNT in Huntsville, shared in a Facebook post that his daughter, Shelby, was bitten Wednesday by what they believe was a large copperhead snake. Shelby, who’s 10th birthday is Sunday, is recovering at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham.

“We are grateful for the care at Grandview, but there’s something that eases our nerves knowing she’s under the watchful eyes of Children’s of Alabama and a loving Lord tonight. Shelby is tough as nails and has no fear. She’s doing well getting medicine to fight the venom in her little body,” Simpson said in a statement, adding a special thanks to the members of his church, Valleydale Baptist.

“It’s been a whirlwind tonight, but we know we are blessed to be where we are giving Shelby everything she needs to get better quickly,” he said.

In a Thursday morning update, Simpson said his daughter is now watching movies and laughing but the “venom did a number on her.”

“She will be ok, but she’s got some healing to do! Thank you for your prayers!” he added.

Simpson has long been a supporter of Children’s Hospital. His youngest son, Brody, has Shone’s Complex, a rare congenital heart disease that has required multiple stays in the hospital and several surgeries. Simpson was instrumental in starting the Castin’ ‘N Catchin’ fishing tournament, held each April on Lake Guntersville in Scottsboro, to raise money for the Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center at Children’s of Alabama.
